PubMed offers access to the public version of MEDLINE, for medical literature searches.  Many searches will provide links to abstracts of published articles with an increasing number of full text articles or links to e-journals becoming available.  This is a very helpful resource for searching current published medically related literature.

Healthfinder

Healthfinder is a free gateway provided by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services for reliable consumer health and health human services information.  Healthfinder contains access to online applications, clearing houses, databases, a variety of web sites, as well as links to other governmental and non-profit organizations.  Contributions to Healthfinder are made by agencies including the following:

The site homepage contains links as listed by:  hot topics, self awareness and prevention modalities, access to online medical information, query engines for specific demographic groups, as well as specific links for healthcare professionals.  There is also a specific link designed for healthcare professionals that has resources related to clinical trials, the MMWR online, a variety of medical references, as well as a number of links to healthcare related organizations.

National Oral Health Information Clearing House (NOHIC)

This is a service created by the National Institute of Dental and Cranial Facial Research to help meet the need for information related to "special types" of patients seen by dental professionals.  This organization produces information in multiple formats including:  fax sheets, brochures, citations and abstracts.  There is some information available to the public free of charge and some at a nominal cost (usually printed and analog video materials).

The site provides a link to the Combined Health Information Database (CHID), http://chid.nih.gov, which is an online database actually comprised of 18 different databases of health information resources sponsored by a variety of federal institutes and agencies including NOHIC.  Through CHID Online, the search capability to all 18 databases can be executed at one time.  The searching can be done with either a simple or detailed search engine, based on the user's choice.  Databases in the CHID's site include:  AIDS education, diabetes, digestive/gastrointestinal diseases, neurological diseases as well as oral health and prevention.  Impressively, the search engine can provide the user with very beneficial information, which often includes abstracts and other critical citation information for further professional evaluation.
